Leicester Diwali 2026: Cossington Park Celebrations and No Public Fireworks

Leicester’s Diwali Day plans bring performances and community activity back to Cossington Park on 8 November. Here is how to plan around the published programme and the decision to have no public fireworks display.

Highlights

  • Diwali Day celebrations are announced for Sunday 8 November 2026.
  • The official guide now lists separate stage and Diwali Village hours.
  • No public fireworks display is part of the council’s Diwali programme.

The announced Diwali Day celebration is on Sunday 8 November 2026. The park venue is Cossington Street Recreation Ground, also called Cossington Park, in Leicester’s Belgrave area. Save the full venue name when sharing your meeting plan.

This guide was checked on 18 October against Leicester City Council and Visit Leicester information. It covers the public celebration, rather than prescribing a temple service or a household Lakshmi Puja time.

What is returning to Cossington Park?

Visit Leicester’s September update describes a stage programme, laser show, Diwali village and funfair. The council’s announcement also includes community music and dance, food vendors and arts-and-crafts stalls. That gives visitors several ways to enjoy the evening beyond watching a single finale.

The official 2026 guide’s map on page 12 lists the main stage from 5 pm to 8:30 pm and Diwali Village from 3 pm to 9 pm. These are local Leicester times. They describe different parts of the event: arriving when the village opens does not mean the stage programme has already started.

Plan the visit around what matters to your group. You might prefer time to eat and look around before the performances, or a shorter stay with children. Keep your onward journey flexible and recheck the organiser’s latest notice before leaving.

Why is there no public fireworks display?

Leicester City Council’s 5 May announcement says public fireworks will not form part of its Diwali event because of crowd-congestion concerns raised by the Safety Advisory Group. The return of park activities follows a review of how celebrations can be accommodated safely.

This is about the council’s Diwali programme, not a statement that every event across Leicester has been cancelled. Visit Leicester separately lists the Abbey Park Firework Display on 7 November. That is a different event, on a different date, with its own ticket arrangements. Use its official listing if that is the experience you are looking for.

Old videos can make the distinction easy to miss. Before forwarding an exciting clip as a guide to this year, check the date and event name. A photograph of fireworks from an earlier Diwali does not describe the 2026 programme.

Make room for the Golden Mile

The wider celebration also takes in Belgrave Road, where the council announced the return of the Wheel of Light. Rangoli displays are associated with Belgrave Neighbourhood Centre. Visit Leicester’s dedicated Diwali page is a useful starting point for the current guide and further updates.

The council said the festive lights would be switched on without a ceremony. Do not plan a separate evening around an assumed public switch-on countdown. For a group visiting from another city, agree whether you want to explore the street, spend time at the park, or do both; those are different meeting instructions.

Planning your visit

Getting there: check the return before setting off

The 2026 guide, page 30, schedules closure of Belgrave Road and its side-road junctions from 5 pm until approximately 9:30 pm on 8 November. Follow current signs and steward directions. A map route to the neighbourhood does not guarantee vehicle access to your preferred drop-off.

Use the Choose How You Move journey planner to compare your journey options, then check your operator’s Sunday service and last useful connection. We are not claiming a special late-night bus, rail extension or live fare.

If you are driving or taking a taxi, agree a lawful meeting place outside restricted approaches. Allow time to walk back to it. Keep the address of your accommodation and a backup contact saved, especially if members of the group are arriving separately.

Planning for children and access needs

Page 34 of the official guide lists an accessible viewing area at the front of the main stage, access information on the event map and a public Information Point in Diwali Village. It also identifies a wheelchair-accessible gondola on the Wheel of Light.

Contact the festivals team about your full route and any assistance you need. A listed facility does not guarantee immediate availability or establish that every approach will suit you. Visit Leicester publishes festivals@leicester.gov.uk and 0116 454 3600 for event enquiries.

For a family visit, choose a meeting point before entering the busy area, keep a contact number with each child and leave space for a shorter evening if needed. These are RouteTales planning suggestions, rather than additional admission conditions.

The final check before travelling

Open the official Diwali page again close to your visit. Its linked 2026 guide was available during our review; programme and access arrangements can still change. Check entry arrangements, any ride or activity charges, your transport home and the weather before committing to a detailed itinerary.

We have not verified a single inclusive admission price or live ride availability. Share the official page with companions alongside your own meeting time. That is more useful than forwarding an old poster whose date or location has been cropped away.
